Keeping your Standard Poodle’s ears clean is a key part of grooming dogs that helps prevent infections and discomfort. Poodles have floppy ears that can trap moisture and debris, making them prone to ear problems if not properly cared for. In this post, I will walk you through the essential supplies you need to clean your Standard Poodle’s ears safely and effectively.

Why Ear Cleaning Is Important for Poodles

Poodles, especially Standard Poodles, have dense hair inside their ears and floppy ear flaps that reduce airflow. This environment can encourage the growth of bacteria and yeast, leading to infections. Puppies are particularly vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing, and they may not tolerate discomfort well.

Regular ear cleaning removes wax buildup, dirt, and moisture, which helps keep your dog comfortable and healthy. It also allows you to check for signs of infection early, such as redness, swelling, or foul odor.

Supplies You Will Need

Before you start cleaning your Poodle’s ears, gather the right supplies. Having everything ready makes the process smoother and less stressful for both you and your dog.

1. Dog Ear Powder

Use a powder that numbs the skin and loosens the hair. The powder will help you get a better grip on the hair when removing it.

2. Cotton Balls or a wash rag

Use cotton balls or a rag to wipe away loosened dirt and cleaner from the ear flap and outer ear canal. Avoid cotton swabs, which can push debris deeper or damage the eardrum.

3. Tweezers

Have a good pair of sturdy tweezers for plucking ear hair. The tweezers below are from Walmart.

4. Ear Wipes / Drops

These wipes are great to use after you pluck all the hair from your dog's ears. This brand helps prevent odor, soothes the ear after pain, and helps prevent future infection. The Adams drops are also good to use after cleaning the ear to help prevent future infection.

5. Ear Ointment

This ear ointment is prescribed by trusted vets. This cream is used to treat infections once they start. This ointment will clean up an ear infection within a couple of days!

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Poodle’s Ears

Once you have your supplies ready, follow these steps to clean your Standard Poodle’s ears safely:

  1. Prepare your dog: Find a comfortable spot where your Poodle can sit or lie down. Use a towel to gently hold your dog if needed.

  2. Apply the ear Powder: Hold the ear flap upright and carefully place the powder in the ear.

  3. Massage the base of the ear: Gently massage the base of the ear for about 20 to 30 seconds. This helps the cleaner break up wax and debris inside.

  4. Let your dog shake: Allow your Poodle to shake its head. This helps loosen debris in the outer ear.

  5. Pluck the hair: Use the tweezers and start plucking the ear hair. If your poodle gets aggravated, switch to the other ear, and then come back.

  6. Wipe the ear: Use a cotton ball or washcloth to wipe away any dirt and excess cleaner from the ear flap and outer canal. Do not insert anything deep into the ear canal.

  7. Wipe the ear with ear wipes or drops: Use the ear wipes or drops and clean the ears of your poodle.

  8. Animax Ointment: If an ear infection is present, use Animax Ointment prescribed by your vet to help clean up the infection.

  9. Reward your dog: Give your Poodle a treat and praise to make the experience positive.

Tips for Grooming Dogs with Sensitive Ears

  • Start cleaning early with puppies to get them used to the process.

  • Clean ears once a week or as recommended by your vet.

  • Watch for signs of infection like redness, swelling, or foul smell.

  • If your dog shows pain or discomfort, stop and consult your veterinarian.

  • Keep the hair around the ear trimmed to improve airflow.
